Melissa Del Bono

Catching up with Meli Melo Founder, Melissa Del Bono

Meli Melo, based on the famous Portobello Road in London, is a luxury handbag label. In the words of Melissa del Bono, the Founder and Creative Director, “it seamlessly blends timeless Italian craftsmanship with a sense of London cool” and is frequently seen on the arm of many of the style elite including Olivia Palermo and Sienna Miller.

We recently had the pleasure of catching up with Melissa, where we chatted about her life, her travels and her love of beautiful design. Whilst looking at our own collection, Melissa also picked out her favourite products and tells us why they resonate so much with her style and ethos.

Melissa’s Aeolian upbringing on the magical Italian island of Lipari has inspired many designs, most notably the Thela Bag, but also her lifestyle. A warm smile spreads over her face as she describes her “affinity to the sea and the many treasures it holds”. Melissa can’t wait to use our large resin stone clams to house some vintage rosé on ice at her next get together with friends. It is sure to bring a little of her coastal heritage into her stylish Notting Hill home, without any negative impact on our delicate ecosystem.

Design is in Melissa’s soul and she leaves no stone unturned, drawing inspiration from every aspect of her life. Melissa loves to travel and running a global fashion brand ensures that she is frequently hot stepping between Paris, Milan and New York. Recent collaborations have taken her further afield to the Far East, including an exciting project with Japanese artist Shoko. “I love Oriental influences which is why I am particularly drawn to the beautiful proportions and symmetry of the antique Chinese bench. A stunning and versatile piece.

For her exquisite handbags, Melissa uses only Italy’s finest natural leather from environmentally and socially responsible sources. To counter balance the chaotic demands of modern life, as well as offer and promote a more sustainable lifestyle, “I extend this ethos into my home too. I love to use natural materials, whether it be linens, rattan or jute and just adore the gorgeous Sequoia Rug in combination with the wonderful Kea cushion”.

Melissa’s home is an impeccable blend of her Italian roots and traditional British influences from her English mother and husband, Doug. Our antique slipper chairs,  upholstered in a timeless black and white ticking, blend perfectly with her eclectic aesthetic. “They will offer a stylish perch to browse through the latest pages of Vogue or read a bedtime story to my two gorgeous children”.

Melissa strongly believes that fashion is a visual expression of yourself and her passion for contemporary art led to “The Art Bag”, an exciting collaboration with Federica Fanari. The uber cool clutch does not disappoint and its fabulous collection of impactful statements, including “Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe” and “All I Ever Wanted Was Everything“ provokes and allures. Art is also an important part of Melissa’s interior and she is always on the look out for new and exciting pieces. “I love to inspire my children and “Look to the Sky” is on point for my youngest son Baxter”. A stunning painting, which Melissa is certain will be sure to inspire his imaginary world of Super Hero’s!
